History

The population registration in Sweden was originally maintained by the Church of Sweden and the oldest preserved records are from early 17th century, and complete archives are usually found from the 18th century and forward. The first decrees regarding person registration in churches came in 1608. A royal decree in 1631 required the names of those born and died to be noted in the church books.cite web|title=Den svenska folkbokföringens historia under tre sekler|publisher=Swedish Tax Agency|url=http://www.skatteverket.se/folkbokforing/ovrigt/folkboforingenshistoria.4.18e1b10334ebe8bc80004141.html|accessdate=2008-01-11]
