and see textThe Pseudocrenilabrinae is a
subfamily in the cichlid family of fishes to which, according to the last studies of Sparks & Smith (2004), belong all the African cichlids with the exception of the similar Malagasy species. Previous authors recognized even wider African sub-families, e.g. theTilapiinae of Hoedeman (1947),Tylochrominae of Poll (1986),Heterochrominae of Kullander (1998) orBoulengerochrominae andParatilapinae of Tawil (2001).To this family belong the cichlids of the greater East-African lakes like the
Mbuna in theLake Malawi , theFuru in theLake Victoria and the remaining endemic cichlid tribes ofLake Tanganyika .The Pseudocrenilabrinae tribes
Haplochromini andTilapiini are widespread in Africa; the others are more localized, partiocularly in theRift Valley lakes.ystematics
Apart from the tribes mentioned, the
Bathybatini ,Benthochromini ,Boulengerochromini ,Cyphotilapiini ,Eretmodini ,Greenwoodochromini ,Limnochromini andPerissodini are sometimes also recognized. Theextinct genus "Mahengechromis " and the enigmatic living species "Etia nguti " are apparently quite singluar Pseudocrenilabrinae, distinct from any of the established tribes.Genera
