This article is about the Jamaican order. For the similarly named Alberta order, see Alberta Order of Excellence.
The Order of Excellence is one of the six civil decorations of Jamaica which are awarded annually to "deserving citizens."[1] The Order of Excellence is the most recent honor to be created, having been brought into being in 2003. As of April 2011 only two awards has been given, the first to Thabo Mbeki, President of South Africa, during his visit to Jamaica in July 2003, and the second to King Juan Carlos of Spain during a royal visit in February 2009[2].
The Order of Excellence took over the function of the Order of Merit, which is now awarded to those "persons of notable achievement in particular fields of study".[1]
