Its seat is the village of Barciany, which lies approximately convert|15|km|mi|0 north of Kętrzyn and convert|74|km|mi|0|abbr=on north-east of the regional capital Olsztyn.

The gmina covers an area of convert|293.62|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 6,735.
