The Mortality Bill for the year 1665 , published by the Parish Clerk’s Company, shows 97 parishes within the City of London [ "The ancient office of Parish Clerk and the Parish Clerks Company of London " Clark, O :London, Journal of the Ecclesiastical Law Society Vol 8, January 2006 ISSN: 0956-618X ] . By September 6th the following year the city lay in ruins [ Diary of Samuel Pepys Dover, Lewis Publications,1992 ISBN 048636675] , 86 churches having been destroyed [ "The Churches of the City of London"Reynolds,H: London, Bodley Head, 1922] . In 1670 a Rebuilding Act was passed and a committee set up under the stewardship of Sir Christopher Wren to decide which would be rebuilt [ "Wren" Whinney,M London Thames & Hudson, 1971 ISBN 0500201129] . Fifty-one were chosen [ "The City of London Churches" Betjeman, J. Andover, Pitkin, 1967 (rpnt 1992) ISBN 0853725659 ] , but St Botolph was perhaps the unluckiest not to be rebuilt ["A Dictionary of London" Harben, H.: London, Herbert Jenkins, 1918] . It was originally to have been ["Vanished Churches of the City of London" Huelin,G London Guildhall Library Publishing 1996 ISBN 0900422424] but part of the site was required for the passage leading to Botolph's Wharf and part for the widening of Thames Street so it was sacrificed [ "The City of London-a history" Borer,M.I.C. : New York,D.McKay Co, 1978 ISBN 0094618801] and united to St George Botolph Lane [ "Church of England, Parish of St George Botolph Lane. - Authenticated copy decree of the Fire Judges Court 1671. - q9833670 . - M0003091CL" cited in "City of London Parish Registers Guide 4" Hallows,A.(Ed) : London, Guildhall Library Research, 1974 ISBN 0900422300 ] . The parish dated back to mediaeval times [“A Survey of London, Vol I”Stow,J : Originally 1598- this edn,London, A.Fullarton & Co,1890] and when excavated during the creation of the "Billingsgate Lorry Park" yielded several valuable finds [“The Roman site at Billingsgate Lorry Park, London - A Catalogue of the Samian and Other Finds” de la Bedoyere, G: London, British Archaeological Reports (Oct 1986) ISBN 0860543927] .
