Fort Pitt Grammar School

Fort Pitt Grammar School is a selective girls' grammar school in Chatham, Kent, UK, built on the site of a Palmerston Fort.

Fort Pitt School is built upon the site of the old fort, sharing the campus with Mid Kent College and the University College for the Creative Arts (formerly KIAD). The school was Girls technical school until their abolishment (the tripartite system was replace by just High and Grammar schools) in the 1970s where it was converted to a grammar school for girls, aged 11 to 18.Fact|date=January 2008

Accelerated Curriculum

An accelerated curriculum has been introduced, in which means girls complete Key Stage 3 in Years 7 and 8, and study for their GCSE examinations in Year 9 and Year 10, a year earlier than would be usual;. The first year to complete the scheme achieved the highest SAT results the school had seen.Fact|date=January 2008 In year nine the students study two GCSE subjects of their choice from a list of: Fine Art, Product Design, Graphic Design, Food Technology, Textiles, Resistant Materials, Music, Geography, Performing Arts, Physical Education, French, Spanish, German, Business Studies, and History. Whilst completing their chosen subjects they also study English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Religious Education, Personal Social Health Education, ICT, and Physical Education. They also take an A level in Critical Thinking which they will sit an exam in year ten. They take their GCSEs in year 10 and can pick up any more GCSEs in year eleven, start A level courses or retake some GCSEs. Fact|date=January 2008

House system

Fort Pitt has a newly introduced House system. The Houses are:Sharman- Green,Rhodes- Yellow,Parkes- White,Nightingale- Blue,Pankhurst- Purple,Rowling - Red. Fact|date=January 2008

Uniform

The school uniform consists of a navy blazer, pleated skirt, pink and white checkered blouse and a navy tank top or navy jumper. The original school uniform was similar to this but did not include a blazer and had a different shade of blue skirt.Fact|date=January 2008

Examinations

The school usually appear in the top ten schools in Kent for SATs, GCSEs and A levels.Fact|date=January 2008

Awards

There is a merit award system in which all teachers have a merit stamp to put in a students planner when they have achieved a high standard of work. If a high number of merit stamps are collected this may be rewarded with gift vouchers. There is also a gifted and talented scheme in which students with outstanding achievement and effort in several lessons is rewarded with school trips, vouchers, recognition, certificates and small trophies. Students are also entered into national competitions such as the maths challenge in which around 50% of Fort Pitt receive a certificate and one or two are invited to be challenged by students from other countries in Europe.Fact|date=January 2008

Sporting achievements

Fort Pitt is a very active school in which they achieve many sports awards. Students are encoureged to take part in sports in and out of school. Students who have a talent for sports are often asked to represent the school in tournaments in Medway. The netball teams in all years always Fact|date=January 2008come within the top two, the under 14 football team recently won the kent girls football cup and the cricket team also won the Kent cup. The girls are also eager to do well in athletics in which fort pitt came top of the league. Many students also take part in outside sports and have succeeded in these. Those who represent their town or county have their photo placed in the school sports hall and their achievement. There is also house inter tournaments in which all students participate in battling it out against other form groups. The points are added up and a trophy is awarded to the winning house. These tournaments take place for netball, hockey, football, rounders, and tennis. Sports day is also a popular sporting event in which individuals represent their form in athletics and try to get top points. A trophy is also awarded to the winning house.Fact|date=January 2008
