Ian Fergusson

Ian Fergusson

Ian Fergusson (Ian K. Fergusson) is BBC Weather Presenter for the West of England and a noted U.K expert on sharks, especially species inhabiting the Mediterranean Sea. He has authored a number of papers in scientific journals since 1993. Much of his academic research has focussed on biology of the great white shark in Mediterranean and north-eastern Atlantic waters.

Born in Stockton-on-Tees, England, in 1965 he works for the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) based in Bristol, UK. He served originally as a cameraman before being appointed as a weather presenter for the BBC in December 2007. He first appeared presenting breakfast weather on BBC Points West in April 2008. Fergusson has appeared in various natural history television productions since the early 1990's documenting sharks, including presenting Channel 4's Equinox: "Jaws in the Med" in 1995.

He formerly worked as a weather presenter for local television in Hertfordshire, UK.

A dedicated marine conservationist, Fergusson was a founding trustee, inaugural chairman and now serves as a patron of the Shark Trust, a wildlife charity based in Plymouth, UK since 1997. He is a member of the IUCN (World Conservation Union) Shark Specialist Group (since 1994).

In 2007 he won the Craft Award for camerawork from the Royal Television Society in Bristol and was nominated for the same category in 2006. Fergusson is a Freeman of the City of London and serves on the editorial advisory board of BBC Wildlife Magazine. He has roots in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, UK, and Bradley Stoke on the outskirts of Bristol.
