Johann Philipp Breyne (born
9 August 1680 in Danzig (Gdańsk ),Poland , died12 December 1764 in Danzig), son ofJacob Breyne (1637-97), was a Germanbotanist ,palaeontologist ,zoologist andentomologist . He is best known for his work on thePolish cochineal ("Porphyrophora polonica"), an insect formerly used in production of red dye. Proposed byHans Sloane , he was elected, on21 April 1703 , a member of theRoyal Society . He was also a member of theGerman Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (after 1715) and theSocietas Litteraria (after 1720)Works
