Its seat is the village of Krynki, which lies approximately convert|24|km|mi|0 south-east of Sokółka and convert|45|km|mi|0|abbr=on east of the regional capital Białystok.

The gmina covers an area of convert|165.91|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 3,423.

The gmina contains part of the protected area called Puszcza Knyszyńska Landscape Park.
