Its seat is the town of Stawiski, which lies approximately convert|16|km|mi|0 east of Kolno and convert|74|km|mi|0|abbr=on west of the regional capital Białystok.

The gmina covers an area of convert|165.55|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 6,572 (out of which the population of Stawiski amounts to 2,442, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 4,130).
