Its seat is the town of Kleszczele, which lies approximately convert|25|km|mi|0 south-west of Hajnówka and convert|61|km|mi|0|abbr=on south of the regional capital Białystok.

The gmina covers an area of convert|142.62|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 2,894 (out of which the population of Kleszczele amounts to 1,432, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 1,462).
