Lotto Weekend Millionaires) is a Dutchgame show based on the original British format of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? ". The show is hosted byRobert ten Brink . The main goal of the game is to win ƒ1/€1 Million by answering 15 multiple-choice questions correctly. It is shown onRTL 4 , earlier it was shown onSBS 6 . It is shown from6 February 1999 totoday . It's host is, from the beginning,Robert ten Brink .From
6 February 1999 to February 2006, it was shown onSBS 6 , but from4 March 2006 totoday , it is shown onRTL 4 .From the start on, the Lotto was the main sponsor, however, in the first seasons (from about 1999-2001), the show was more commonly known as Weekend Miljonairs. When a contestant gets the fifth question correct, he will leave with at least €500.When a contestant gets the tenth question correct, he will leave with at least €16,000.From 1999-2001, when the
euro wasn't used yet and theDutch guilder s was used inHolland , it was like this:When a contestant got the fifth question correct, he would leave with at least ƒ1,000.When a contestant got the tenth question correct, he would leave with at least ƒ32,000.The program has only been won once so far, on January 6, 2001 by
Hans Peters .Because theeuro wasn't used yet in 2001, he didn't won €1 Million, but ƒ1,000,000 (€453,780).The final question has also been answered wrong once, on December 20, 2003 by contestant
Menno de Ruijter , which caused him to lose €234,000 of the €250,000 he had! There have been a lot of other final questions, but none of the contestants took the risk.
Ending of the program
In November 2007, the Lotto announced that it would stop sponsoring the show in mid-2008, and would not renew the contract. RTL didn't want to give up the program, and so they searched hard for a new sponsor. Eventually, they failed.
The last episode aired on May 24, 2008.
For some time it seemed like the program would still return after the summer of
2008 , but unfortunately, onJune 26 2008 , RTL told in public that would not return. However, they also said that the program still can return, if they find another sponsor.Robert ten Brink , the host of the program, will be the host of the Dutch version of The Moment of Truth (U.S. game show).Money Trees
