Its seat is the town of Lipsk, which lies approximately convert|32|km|mi|0 south-east of Augustów and convert|71|km|mi|0|abbr=on north of the regional capital Białystok.

The gmina covers an area of convert|184.42|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 5,660 (out of which the population of Lipsk amounts to 2,498, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 3,162).
