The village is known since the times of
Etruscan s and Romans, who exploited its importantcinnabar mines. In theMiddle Ages , the powerfulAldobrandeschi family (rulers of much of southern Tuscany] built here the massive "Rocca Silvana" (9th century), which saw an intense history of battles and sieges between the Aldobrandeschi, theOrsini and theRepublic of Siena .In the nearby is the
Monte Amiata .
