Austin Jenks, a river boat captain and businessman, purchased property and built a house at 504 5th St. South, Stillwater, Minnesota [http://www.ci.stillwater.mn.us/] between 1861 and 1871. The house is composed of three architectural styles contemporary to the mid nineteenth century, all predating the Queen Anne style [http://architecture.about.com/cs/housestyles/a/queenanne.htm/Victorian] more commonly reflected in historic Stillwater homes. ] The cruciform roof line and floor plan with a bracketed square entry tower in the arm of the cross are of the Italianate [http://www.victorianvilla.com/architecture/index.htm/ Tuscan Villa] style. The steep eaves, soffits and finials together with gables and paired windows framed by square cut stone sills and lentils are in the [http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~twp/architecture/gothic/ American Gothic Revival] style. Finally, the mansard tower roof, platform porches, and oval stained glass windows are of French Second Empire [http://www.erasofelegance.com/arts/victarchitecture.html#4/] influence. The home has been recently restored to its original period condition by its present owner and occupant, Dr. J. Thomas Vaughan.
