Nearu

Nearu

Nearu is a self defense martial art, founded by Amir Lotfi Azad in 1991. It is based on Kateda, but changed some parts and tried to avoid its notoriety, also it uses parts of other arts like: Silat , Aikido and Tai Chi.

Movements and Practices

In Nearu, practitioners learn 50 different movements (Which is different from Kateda's simple movements).

Movements are categorized in 3 categories:
# Khiz: Basic movements including direct penetrating punches, direct penetrating kicks, high kicks from sides and simple blockings. There are 10 Khiz movements. When a practitioner reaches the orange belt he/she has learned all Khiz movements.
# Gaam: Gaam movements are "defend and attack" movements. Most of these movements consist of a defensive movement to block or dodge the incoming attack, and then an invasion towards the attacker. Most of Khiz movements are used in combination with each other in Gaam techniques. there are 20 Gaam techniques. When a practitioner reaches the brown belt, he/she has learned all Gaam techniques.
# Walk: Both Khiz and Gaam techniques start from the formal guard position. Walk techniques instead, start from the normal standing position and are most useful for self defense situations. There are 20 Walk techniques. When a practitioner reaches the brown belt, he/she has learned all Walk techniques.

As practitioner learns basic movements, he/she starts to learn breathing techniques and improves his/her inner power (also known as Qi).

Practices are three times a week, and there is usually an annual Camp outside the city.

Belting System

belt colors are:
* White
* Yellow
* Orange
* Green
* Blue
* Violet
* Brown
* Black

After these belts there is eight grades.

There is no fixed time to advance through white to black belt, but in most cases it takes three to six years of practice. In higher grades the achievements are much harder.
