"The Brothers Rico" (1957) is a American crime film noir directed by Phil Karlson and written by Lewis Meltzer, Ben Perry, and Dalton Trumbo, based on a story written by Georges Simenon, a French detective-story specialist. Plot

The film tells of the Rico brothers who are mobsters in the employ of syndicate head Sid Kubick (Larry Gates).

Eddie Rico (Richard Conte) is a Rico brother who has given up crime. But the other Ricos (James Darren and Paul Picerni) have not. This causes a rift in the brothers' family.

Eddie gets word that his brothers have been marked for murder, and tries to warn them.

What Eddie does not know, at least until the last moments of the film, is that Kubick is the man who has ordered the Rico boys murdered.

Critical reception

The staff at "Variety" magazine gave the film a positive review and lauded the acting in the drama, writing, "Phil Karlson forges hard action into unfoldment of film. Performances are first-class right down the line, Conte a standout as a man finally disillusioned after thinking of the syndicate leader who orders his brother's execution as a close family friend. Both "femmes" have comparatively little to do, Dianne Crosby as Conte's wife and Kathryn Grant as the brother's, but make their work count.
