updated= January 3, 2008Ard Patrick won what was one of the notable battles of the early 20th century when he and Sceptre, 1902's top middle-distance colt and
filly , respectively, faced the year'sEpsom Derby winnerRock Sand in the 1903Eclipse Stakes . Rock Sand could not stay with his seniors and Ard Patrick wore down Sceptre near the line to win by a neck. This was the second time in three attempts that he had beaten the outstanding filly. Ard Patrick had finished third to Sceptre in the 2,000 Guineas, but reversed that in the 1902 Derby, with the filly - who started favourite - only fourth. After the Derby, he was awarded thePrince of Wales's Stakes on an objection. Ard Patrick missed the St. Leger because of leg trouble and broke down so badly after the great Eclipse Stakes that he could not race again. Before that race he had been sold as astallion to the German government for £21,000 but despite siring aDeutsches Derby winner, Ariel, and the successful mare Antwort, he did not achieve much as a stallion.References
