Effat Ghazi

Effat Ghazi

Effat Ghazi (Persian: عفت قاضی)(2 November 19356 September 1990) was a Swedish woman of Iranian-Kurdish descent who was murdered in 1990.

Effat Ghazi was the daughter of the Kurdish nationalist leader Qazi Muhammad. On 6 September 1990 she was killed in her apartment in Västerås, Sweden, after she had opened a letter bomb addressed to her husband, the Kurdish political activist Amir Ghazi. She died at hospital four hours later from her wounds. Her husband was a leading member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) and this attack had many similarities to other assassinations and assassination attempts on Iranian-Kurdish political dissidents around the world at this time. The Iranian government was suspected of having ordered the murder as in many of the other cases. However, a few years after the assassination, the Swedish police decided to close the investigation citing lack of evidence.cite news |first=Babak |last=Rahimi |title=Offer för Irans dödspatruller |url=http://www.uppmana.nu/content/view/3173/32/ |publisher=Mana |date=2002-11-19 |accessdate=2007-12-30 |language=Swedish ]

Thousands of people showed up at her funeral in Västerås, many of them from abroad. One of the speekers at the funeral was C.-H. Hermansson, then leader of the Swedish Left Party.
