Its seat is the town of Janowiec Wielkopolski, which lies approximately convert|18|km|mi|0 south-west of Żnin and convert|53|km|mi|0|abbr=on south-west of Bydgoszcz.

The gmina covers an area of convert|130.74|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 9,314 (out of which the population of Janowiec Wielkopolski amounts to 4,114, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 5,200).
