United States National Road Race Championships

The United States National Road Race Championships began in 1985, they were previously held in Philadelphia, Penn. They are run by the governing body, USA Cycling. The event has moved to Greenville, S.C. in 2006. That same year USA Cycling changed the rules for entry into the road race field for professionals. All competitors were required to be U.S. citizens, as well as to be members of UCI-registered trade teams. Previously, the event was open to both American and international professional riders, the first rider from the United States that crosses the finish line was considered the "United States National Road Race Champion" and had the right to wear the national champion's jersey.

The 2006 USPRO Road Race Championships was held September 2 and consisted solely of riders from the United States with valid UCI racing licenses. The winner becomes the "United States National Road Race Champion" and have the right to wear the national champion's jersey.

Prior to the 2006 race, the first rider from the United States that crosses the finish line was considered the "United States National Road Race Champion" and had the right to wear the national champion's jersey.
