Gilberto Mendes (b. Santos, Oct, 13, 1922) is a
Brazil ian composer.Mendes attended the
Santos Conservatory from 1941 to 1949, and studied composition underCláudio Santoro in 1954 and underGeorge Olivier Toni from 1958-1960. In the 1960s he studied in Darmstadt underPierre Boulez ,Henri Pousseur , andKarlheinz Stockhausen . In 1965, he founded the Santos Festival for New Music. In the 1970s and 1980s, he taught at theUniversity of Wisconsin and theUniversity of Texas , then was professor of music inSao Paulo .Mendes's compositions include
cantata s,motet s, orchestral music,incidental music , solo and chamber pieces, and someavant-garde works.References
