James E. Church

James Edward Church, Jr. (February 15, 1869 - August 5, 1959) is best known for having developed the [http://amsglossary.allenpress.com/glossary/search?id=mount-rose-snow-sampler1 Mount Rose snow sampler] (1906), the first instrument for measuring snow water content. It is still in use today. Dr. Church, who received his Ph.D from the University of Munich, was born in Holly, Michigan on February 15, 1869. He taught Latin, German and fine arts at the University of Nevada, Reno from 1892 - 1939 [ [http://www.ametsoc.org/chapters/renotahoe/James_Church/Slide19.html Dr. James E. Church - slide 19 ] ] and was the first person of European decent to ascend Mount Rose (1896).
