Hamble James Leacock (`1795-1856) was an
Africa n missionary. He was born inBarbados , where his father was a slaveholder. He became aclergy man and gave the privileges of the Church to all slaves of his parish, at the same time freeing his own slaves. Difficulty with the Bishop, insurrection of the slaves, depreciation in the value of property occurring, he removed to theUnited States , where he was settled inKentucky ,Tennessee , andNew Jersey . In 1855 he sailed for Africa as a missionary of theWest Indian Church Association and founded a station atRio Pongas , Sierre Leone.Publications
