He was a professional for 18 years. One of Britain's foremost racing cyclists in the 1970s and 1980scite web|url=http://xpedia.frogtrade.net/index.phtml?d=3337|title=Diary Of A Pro Cyclist|publisher=xpedia.co.uk] with over 380 wins, [cite news|url=http://www.cyclingnews.com/road.php?id=road/2007/sep07/newport07|title=Newport Nocturn|publisher=cyclingnews.com|date=1 September 2007] Barras is also the father of current professional racing cyclist, Tom Barras. In 1999, Barras was Directeur Sportif for British UCI Division 3 Men's Health cycling team. He is also team manager of Recycling.co.uk in 2007.
