- Baron de Lestac
Baron de Lestac is a
Bordeaux wine , produced in both red and white varieties. The red is sold in small (37.5 cl) bottles, standard 75 cl and magnum (150 cl) bottles. It is also available in "wine boxes" holding 3 litres ("cubis" in french) which, once opened, remain good for four weeks. These "cubis" are often bought by the expatriated English living in France, especially those who drink wine with every meal.
The white is sold only in standard 75cl bottles and is less widely available.
"Le Baron", as it is called by its regular consumers, has a very strong taste of oak.
A standard sized bottle of red is available for something in the region of €3.60-4.60, making it relatively cheap for a Bordeaux. According to an expert at the French wine merchant Nicolas, the Baron is the best selling Bordeaux in France, and the economies of scale and buying power of the Baron de Lestac enables it to be sold for such a reasonable price.
A cubis is about €13.
Le Baron is sometimes dismissed by wine-snobs because of its reasonable price and powerful taste of oak, but for many it is a daily drinker.
