Area code 500 is a non-geographic
area code reserved for Personal Communications Services. It was authorized by theUnited States Federal Communications Commission and introduced into theNorth American Numbering Plan in1995 .In 1995
AT&T introduced a "follow-me" service under the brand name of "AT&T True Connections" using the 500 area code. It was designed to replace the "AT&T EasyReach 700" service. OtherLocal exchange carrier s andInterexchange carrier s introduced similar competitive services. AT&T True Connections was discontinued by AT&T in2000 , following theFederal Communications Commission approval of itstariff to cease providing the service.Though AT&T dropped their service based on area code 500, the code is in active use and will be supplemented by 533.
