Kernersville, North Carolina in1993 . He attendedEast Forsyth High School in Kernersville. In November1998 , Alec signed a letter of intent to attend theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on abaseball scholarship.Minor league career
Zumwalt was selected by the
Atlanta Braves in the 4th round (144th overall) of the by|1999 amateur entry draft. He started his professional career as anoutfielder for the Rookie leagueGCL Braves . He advanced to the Rookie-AdvancedDanville Braves in by|2000, and the next year advanced to the Class AMacon Braves . In his second season with Macon, by|2002, he made the transition to pitcher. Also during that season, he was promoted to the Class A-AdvancedMyrtle Beach Pelicans . In by|2003, Zumwalt spilt his time in between Myrtle Beach and the Double-AGreenville Braves , finishing the season with a 1.99 ERA. He was the third pick and first pitcher taken in theMajor League Baseball phase of theRule 5 draft , in December 2003 by theTampa Bay Devil Rays . Alec was returned to the Braves in late March by|2004 after not making the Devil Rays major league team out ofspring training . Alec spent the entire 2004 season in Double-A. He was the Greenville Braves Community Service Player of the Year 2004.On
December 13 , 2004, Zumwalt was traded to theMilwaukee Brewers organization with José Capellán forDan Kolb . In his first two years with this new organization, he played with the Double-AHuntsville Stars and the Triple-ANashville Sounds both years. He went on to be named the by|2005 Huntsville Stars in the Community Player of the year. He was promoted August 2005 to the Triple-ANashville Sounds where he became an active part of the team that would go on to become the 2005Pacific Coast League Champions. In by|2006, he led theMilwaukee Brewers organization with 20 saves. He pitched the final inning of Nashville’s combined no-hitter onJuly 15 , 2006 vs. theMemphis Redbirds , withCarlos Villanueva and Mike Meyers.Zumwalt began the 2007 season with Nashville, but was acquired by the
Oakland Athletics via trade and assigned to theSacramento River Cats , their Triple-A club, in May. He was released from his contract in late July and then re-signed by Nashville in late August.Zumwalt signed with the Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League for the by|2008 season.
