Castle of Ahlden

Castle of Ahlden

The Castle of Ahlden is a castle in Lüneburg Heath, the nearly lifelong prison-house of Sophia Dorothea of Celle, wife of George I of England and the mother of George II of England. The princess Sophie Dorothea from Luneburg was divorced from her husband in 1694, when she was brought to the castle of Ahlden, where she was imprisoned until her death in 1727.The reason for her divorce was her affair with the lieutenant Koenigsmarck. As they planned to exile to the Duke of Brunswick, Anton Ulrich,Koenigsmarck was assassinated by two soldiers in the Hanover castle. Sophie Dorothea, the grandmother of Friedrich II of Prussia, shared a similar fate like her granddaughter Caroline Mathilde, who had an unlucky affair with Struensee. She also found her "prison" in the castle of Celle.
