McDougall signed with the Erie Panthers following a season of senior hockey in Port aux Basques. After an impressive 80 goals and 148 in just 57 games, he signed with the Detroit Red Wings and finished the end of the 1989–90 season with the farm club Adirondack Red Wings. He appeared in 3 games for the parent club the following season as he posted strong scoring numbers with Adirondack. McDougall was traded to the Edmonton Oilers organization midway through the 1991–92 season. The Cape Breton Oilers 1992–1993 playoffs was one of the most dominant in AHL history. During the 1993 Calder Cup playoffs, Cape Breton won 14 games and only lost two. During the 16 games, McDougall scored 26 goals, and added 26 assists for 52 points. Fourteen years later, his records for goals, assists and points all stand, and his total of 3.25 points per game, is more than was ever matched in the NHL. McDougall spend the following season in the Tampa Bay Lightning organization, appearing in 22 games with the parent club while scoring 3 goals and 3 assists. He then spent the next 8 seasons playing in Italy, Switzerland, and Germany.
