Sakharam Binder

Sakharam Binder (Sakharam, the Binder) is a play by Marathi playwright Vijay Tendulkar and was first performed in 1972 [ [http://www.iaac.us/Tendulkarfestival/Tendulkarbio.htm Tendulkar Biography] ] .

ynopsis

It is about a man, a bookbinder by profession, who doesn't believe either in conventionality, be it in marriage, morality, or social codes, yet feels free to use the society and its people (women), for his selfish motives, without any personal ethics to guide him, he regularly gives 'shelter' to cast-off wives, only to later use them himself for his personal gratification. Adaptation and Translations

The play has since been adapted [ [http://www.mumbaitheatreguide.com/dramas/hindi/sakharam_binder_retold.asp Sakhram Retold] ] and translated into many Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali and English.

Its most recent performance in English was as the closing play at the month-long, Tendulkar Festival, held at New York, in 2004 [ [http://www.iaac.us/Tendulkarfestival/home.htm Tendulkar festival] ] .
