Toughest cowboy

Toughest Cowboy is a competition based reality television program that follows twelve cowboys as they compete in head-to-head competitions in effort to take home the title of the Toughest Cowboy Champion and the deed to a 35-acre ranch in Colorado. Currently in its second season Toughest Cowboy premiered April 8, 2007 on the Fox Sports Network (FSN).

Show Format

Hosted by Charissa Thompson, the live events spokesperson, Toughest Cowboy brings together a mix of veteran and rookie cowboys. Clay Matvick, TV play-by-play announcer, and Donnie Gay, an 8 time World Champion bull rider, give commentary during the tournaments.

Toughest Cowboy has been nicknamed the “Rodeo Revolution” because of its innovative format. In traditional rodeos cowboys specialize in one event, but Toughest Cowboy breaks those rules by having each cowboy compete in three roughstock events in one night-bareback riding, bull riding and saddle bronc riding. The cowboys compete in match play for total wins. At the end of the season the playoffs are seeded based regular season win-loss record. The Championship Tournament is a two-round (semi-final and final) competition where the four finalists ride six times and the cowboy with the most wins at the end of the night is crowned the Toughest Cowboy Champion.

Live Events

Toughest Cowboy live events allow fans to be apart of the action. Each event ends with an in-arena concert on the dirt where up-and-coming country recording artists perform. The 2007 season featured country recording artist Rodney Atkins. Half of the 2008 season will feature country music star Trent Tomlinson whose best known singles are “One Wing in Fire” and “Drunker than Me” from his debut CD “Country is my Rock.” The other half of the 2008 season will feature recording artist Jake Owen who reached star status with his debut album “Startin’ With Me.”

Season One

The inaugural season of Toughest Cowboy marked the first time an all around roughstock rodeo competition was produced for television. The broadcast contained both rodeo action and olymic-style retrospectives of the competitors. The four cowboys to make it to the finals were Trey Broussard, Bandy Murphy, Nelson Tsosie and Erik Wolford. After two rounds of competition Bandy Murphy stood as the first Toughest Cowboy Champion.

Season Two

Season two kicks off with the Toughest Cowboy Boot Camp where 28 toughest cowboy hopefuls compete for 12 spots in an intense two-day competition. After the 12 cowboys are selected the group competes in live venues across the United States for the Toughest Cowboy title and the deed to his own ranch.
