List of major characters of Scrubs

The following is a list of major characters from the American situation comedy "Scrubs".

J.D.

Dr. John (or Jonathan) Michael "J.D." Dorian (b. 1975) is the narrator and main character. His voice-overs link the two to three story arcs in each episode. An affable geek, J.D. is the younger son of Sam and Barbara Dorian with an older brother, Dan (Tom Cavanagh). J.D. grew up in Trotwood, Ohio. His father, played by actor John Ritter dies in , a tribute to Ritter's death in 2003.

Initially an intern (Season 1), and later a resident (Season 2 - 4), J.D. becomes an attending physician in internal medicine and Chief Resident along with Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke) for his fourth year at Sacred Heart. Although politically oblivious and quirky, with a tendency to accidents on his Scooter or bike, J.D. is consistently portrayed as a competent, caring and personable physician.

J.D. has distinct relationships with other major characters, which inform the series as a whole. He was college roommates (at the College of William and Mary with Turk, his best friend and for whom J.D. has a codependent fixation. Elliot Reid has been a friend and sometime paramour since the series started. The sexual tension between them has been a recurring plotline in the series. Throughout the series, he has had an unorthodox relationship with chief attending physician Dr. Cox who regularly berates him and calls him a succession of girls' names. However, Cox has a genuine concern, pride and respect for him (if rarely displayed), and J.D. views him as his mentor. J.D. is also repeatedly victimized by the Janitor, with whom he is "at war". He also regularly solicits advice from Carla Espinosa. He has had numerous romantic entanglements, culminating in the pregnancy of his girlfriend Kim Briggs. Their relationship eventually founders after the birth of their child Sam.

J.D.'s name is derived from Dr. Jonathan Doris, a college friend of creator Bill Lawrence. Doris serves as medical advisor on the show. Elliot Reid

Elliot is a close friend and former fellow attending physician to series protagonist J.D. (Zach Braff). The boundaries between friendship and romance have often been crossed throughout the show's run.

She is also close to Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes) and Chris Turk (Donald Faison), the series' other chief characters. During the course of the show, she has had several romantic relationships, and becomes engaged to fellow Sacred Heart doctor Keith Dudemeister (Travis Schuldt) in season 6. She breaks off the engagement in season 7, however.

Janitor

The janitor is a character who's real name is unknown. He takes pride in his ability to torment JD on a daily basis, though the two have had some touching moments. He had a brief stint working at the coffee shop, and the gift shop, but his true feelings of pride about working at the hospital were revealed in His story III.
