Swithland Reservoir

Swithland Reservoir

Swithland Reservoir is a reservoir in the English county of Leicestershire. It is north-est of the village of Swithland from which it takes its name, north-west of Rothley, south-east of Mountsorrel Quarry. The dam is at the north end and is crossed by Kinchley Lane. A large island, Brazil Island in the reservoir and at this point there is a mini-dam thing (please insert technical name) which raises the water level further. Completed in about 1896 and about the same time or shortly afterwards Swithland Viaduct of the Great Central Railway's, London Extension crosses the body of water 2/3 of the way down, via Brazil Island. Today this forms part of the route of the preserved Great Central Railway. To the south of the viaduct is Swithland Sidings and originally there was going to be a station built here but it never materialised. gbmapping|SK558143
