The original engine displaced 1.2 L (1186 cc) with an 80 mm bore and 59 mm stroke and produced between Convert|63|hp|kW|0|abbr=on-Convert|68|hp|kW|0|abbr=on

The engine was stroked (to 64 mm) to create the 1.3 L (1286 cc) version. This engine produced 75 hp (56 kW).

From 1978 until 1987, the largest member of the family was the 1.5 L (1490 cc) "1500". It produced 85 to 105 hp (63 to 78 kW).This is the largest engine to be naturally found in Alfasuds, though many have picked them up over subsequent years.

In 1986 the engine was increased in size to 1712 cc, it was used in the 33 and later Sprints, power was between Convert|106|hp|kW|0|abbr=on-Convert|116|hp|kW|0|abbr=on.

In 1990 a quad cam 16 valve version of the venerable boxer was produced, it was the most powerful to date with Convert|137|hp|kW|0|abbr=on. Only available in fuel injected form, the 1.7 16V was equipped with the Bosch ML 4.1 system.
The last Alfa Romeo flat-4 was produced in 1995, a run of 24 years.
