Museum of the Macedonian Struggle
- Museum of the Macedonian Struggle
The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle is a museum in Thessaloniki, Greece, documenting the Greek Struggle for Macedonia of 1903 to 1908, in which Greek guerrillas, later supported by the Greek government, fought both the Ottoman Empire and Bulgarian guerrillas for control of Macedonia (Greece).
The building
It was designed in 1894 by architect Ernst Ziller and served as the Greek General Consulate of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, from which much of the Greek guerrilla activity was coordinated. It is located at the street now named Proxenou Koromila (Προξένου Κορομηλά, Consul Koromila) after the Consul at the time, Lambros Koromilas.
The museum
The museum has public exhibits on the conflict, and in addition produces both educational and scholarly publications. Its main scholarly contribution is to collect first-hand accounts from the now elderly participants in and observers of the conflict, in order to preserve their oral histories as primary sources for future scholarship. The museum opened in 1982 and it is since run by the Association of the Friends of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle. In the same building also operates the Κ.Ε.Μ.Ι.Τ. (Κέντρο Έρευνας Μακεδονικής Ιστορίας και Τεκμηρίωσης, Research Centre for Macedonian History and Documentation), assosiate of the Macedonian struggle museum. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday 09:00-14:00, Wednesday 18:00-20:00, Saturday & Sunday 11:00-14:30. Entrance is free.
