The Breakaways Reserve

The Breakaways Reserve or just simply The Breakaways, is a large national reserve found in northern South Australia, just off the Stuart Highway near Coober Pedy.

Name Etymology

The reserve gets the name "The Breakaways" because the plateaus and massive rocks look like they have broken off the 'main land' from a distance. It has been a reserve for most of Australia's history

Formation

The formation of the Breakaways Reserve is said to be from the evaporation of an inland, ancient, Australian sea. The formation of the Plateau's would have been the many islands found in the sea. It is said that after the continental shift, the climate changed and evaporated the sea.

Temperature

The temperature of the reserve is usually the same as most of inland Australia, with cool nights and very hot days. The temperature in summer can reach up to 45 degrees with an average ground temperature of 65 degrees.

The breakaways is open 24/7 and is free for a family trip. Tours are conducted at a fee.
