- Gilbert Breschet
Gilbert Breschet (
July 7 ,1784 -May 10 ,1845 ) was a Frenchanatomist who was born inClermont-Ferrand . He studied medicine at theUniversity of Paris , and in 1812 was conferred as doctor of medicine inParis . In 1836 he succeededJean Cruveilhier (1791-1874) as professor of anatomy at the "Faculté de médecine de Paris".Breschet made many contributions in
comparative anatomy and research of zoonotic diseases. In 1813 withFrançois Magendie (1783-1855) he demonstrated thatrabies can be transmitted from thesaliva of humans to dogs. He also discovered the "rete mirabile " in whales and dolphins, which is a vascular network that allows these mammals to survive and adapt at ocean depths.He did extensive anatomical studies of
veins of thecranium and spine, and made important investigations of the auditory system invertebrate s. He provided a comprehensive description of the utricle andsaccule of theinner ear , and is credited for introducing the termsotoconia andhelicotrema . The helicotrema is sometimes referred to as "Breschet's hiatus", which is a passageway that connects thescala tympani andscala vestibuli at the top of thecochlea . Breschet has several other anatomical terms named after him, including:
* "Breschet's bone(s)": Smallossicle s occasionally found in theligament s of thesternoclavicular articulation . Also known as "os suprasternale" or as an episternal bone.
* "Breschet's canals": ("canales diploici"), Channels in thediploe of the skull that accommodate thediploic veins .
* "Breschet's sinus": Also known as thesphenoparietal sinus .
