He was born in the early 1920s in
Jaipur ,Rajasthan , the eldest of four brothers and a sister. He was trained inKathak from the age of four. His younger brother B. Hiralal was also trained in Kathak.Fact|date=September 2008 Sohanlal and his family left Jaipur to seek their fortune in the South. They settled inChennai , capital city ofTamil Nadu State. He married and settled in Chennai. He has four sons and a daughter. He is considered to be the greatest exponent of Kathak - particularly in Hindi cinema. He encouraged his younger brother B .
