History

The PHPEclipse project was started in November 2002 as an open source add-on to the eclipse framework to provide PHP tools and highlighting. It is a popular package, [http://dev.eclipse.org/mhonarc/lists/linux-distros-dev/msg00066.html] [http://www.amazon.com/review/product/1904811442?showViewpoints=1] but failed to get recognition as the 'official' PHP framework for Eclipse. Instead, PHP Development Tools, an "Eclipse Project" backed by Zend Technologies (incidentally developer of Zend Studio, a commercially available PHP integrated development environment), was started in 2006 to take that position.

There are 330,000 downloads recorded on the sourceforge site for the last packaged release, but with online updates and it's inclusion as standard in many of the standard Linux distributions that include Eclipse [http://rpm.pbone.net/ RPM archive and search for eclipse-phpeclipse] the actual number of users is difficult to estimate. PHPEclipse retains its open source base and has an active presence on sourceforge.
