- USS Huron (1875)
USS "Huron", was an iron sloop-rigged steamer built by John Roach in
Chester, Pennsylvania during 1873-75 and commissioned at Philadelphia Navy Yard onNovember 15 ,1875 , with Commander George P. Ryan in command."Huron" arrived
December 11 1875 for duty at theNorfolk Navy Yard , and spent the next 2 years cruising in theCaribbean and theGulf of Mexico . She stopped atVera Cruz andKey West on her first cruise, returning toPort Royal onAugust 4 1876 , and visited many Caribbean and Venezuelan ports between March-June 1877. After repairs at New York Navy Yard in August, the ship sailed toHampton Roads , and departedNovember 23 1877 for a scientific cruise on the coast ofCuba . "Huron" encountered heavy weather soon after departure, however, and was wrecked shortly after 1 a.m. next morning nearNags Head, North Carolina . For a time her crew worked in relatively little danger, attempting to free their ship, but she soon heeled over, carrying 98 officers and men to their deaths.References
