Midland Lutheran College

Midland Lutheran College (Fremont, Nebraska) is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. According to the Carnegie Foundation classification system, MLC is a professions plus arts and sciences classification.

History

The college was founded 1883 in Atchison, Kansas, by German Lutheran immigrants. The school moved to Fremont in 1919. In 1962, Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska, merged with Midland Lutheran.

In the 2006-2007 school year, administration at Midland Lutheran College reduced arts programs including music, theatre, journalism, and youth and family ministry. These needed reductions were due to extremely low enrollment in these programs (in some cases less than two graduates in the last 5 years). A small group of students opposed these decisions and cuts, but the college proceeded with the elimination of these programs, based on the high financial cost of continuing to offer them. Although unpopular with the group of students that protested, many current students and alumni widely agree that the reductions have helped the institution grow and expand. A recent adult education program called Mpact was added to attract non-traditional students.

Although Midland Lutheran College removed some programs, the College still has drama and music productions regularly. The pep band still plays at most home football games and a newspaper is still regularly produced at the college. These opportunities help provide a great Liberal Arts education that has always been found at MLC. Although the fine arts are no longer major programs of study, this does not affect the Liberal Arts designation due to the fact that a Liberal Arts education simply means that a student will graduate with knowledge in areas of study outside of their major program.

Midland boasts several nationally recognized scholars, foremost among them Dr Henry Krusiewicz, Biblical scholar and literary theorist, whose book-length study, "The Construction of Potato Salad in the Modern Novel," was widely reviewed in academic presses all across Nebraska.

Their athletic mascot is the Warriors.
