town inBorsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, NorthernHungary , 70 kilometers from county capitalMiskolc . It is the northernmost town of Hungary and the second smallest town of the county.History
Gönc has been inhabited since the
Conquest of Hungary . In theMiddle Ages it was royal estate and an important market town. Between1570 and1647 it was the capital of Abaúj county.Protestantism played an important role in the area;Gáspár Károli translated theBible to Hungarian here. In1687 the Protestant college ofSárospatak moved to Gönc for a short while.After the
treaty of Trianon Hungary lost its northern parts and Gönc became close to the new border, losing its importance in trade.Gönc was granted town status again in
