Jairo Raul Clopatofsky Ghisays (born October 20, 1961 in Cartagena, Bolivar) is a Colombian politician, currently serving as senator of Colombia. Clopatofsky was reelected for the period 2006-2010 after serving two terms as senator; between 1994-1998 and 2002-2006.

Early years and education

Clopatofsky was born in Cartagena, Bolivar on October 20, 1961. During his youth Clopatofsky suffered an accident that paralyzed his legs. He studied at the Colegio Liceo de La Salle until 10th grade, then he was enrolled in the "Escuela Naval de Cadetes de Cartagena" the Colombian Cadets Naval Academy in Cartagena to graduate from high school.

He studied business administration at the "Universidad de La Sabana" in Bogotá. He did graduate studies in Political Science in the "Pontificia Universidad Javeriana" also in Bogotá and a master in public administration from Harvard University. He also specialized in planning and administration of defense resources at the National Defense University' Center for Hemisphere Studies in the United States.

Political career

In 1988 Clopatofsky created the Partido Civico Independiente a political movement in an effort to counter the bipartisan political system of the time in Colombia.

Congressman

In 1991 was elected to the Chamber of Representatives of Colombia for the term between 1991 and 1994 representing Bogotá. In 1994 Clopatofsky was elected to the Senate of Colombia for the period between 1994 and 1998. In 2002 he returned to the senate after wining in the legislative elections of 2002. His party then adhered to the Social National Unity Party which supported Alvaro Uribe to the presidency of Colombia.

In 2006 Clopatofsky was reelected in the legislative elections of 2006. Clopatofsky is member of the Second Commission of the Senate which debates topics related to defense and international relations of Colombia, as well as participant in the Special Commission for Foreign Affairs.

In 2005 Clopatofsky went through an experimental surgery process to transplant using stem cells. In July 2006 Clopatofsky was able to stand up and make a few steps, he still in a process of observance. Philanthropy
