His father was a lawyer and he attended
Giggleswick School andRADA . He then spent 3 years working inrepertory theatre .After minor roles in series such as "Z Cars ", "The Avengers", and "Edgar Wallace Mysteries" throughout the early 1960s, he found fame as the super-powered secret agent Richard Barrett in the 1968 Britishespionage /science fiction adventure series "The Champions ".Later career
In the early 1980s he starred as harassed father Arthur Crabtree in the sitcom "No Place Like Home". He subsequently made many guest appearances in other series such as "
Juliet Bravo " and "Doctor Who " ("Revelation of the Daleks "). From 1995 to 1997, he starred in the sitcom "Next of Kin" oppositePenelope Keith . Gaunt starred in the 2004Doctor Who audio series "Dalek Empire III".tage roles
He also has extensive stage experience, both as an
actor and atheatre director , including a notable success in playing theMicheál MacLiammóir character in "Gates of Gold" byFrank McGuinness at theFinborough Theatre ,London , and in the West End.He appeared in the
Royal Shakespeare Company production of "The Seagull ", sharing the role of Sorin withIan McKellen and appeared in "King Lear " as Gloucester at theNew London Theatre inDrury Lane ,London , following aUnited Kingdom tour.
