civil engineer ,academic and the 114th president of theInstitution of Civil Engineers .Coates was born in
New Mills ,Derbyshire and was educated at the localgrammar school . He was taken into articled pupilage, a form ofapprenticeship , byMansfield Borough Council and studied for a degree in Civil Engineering atUniversity College Nottingham . Royal Engineers during theSecond World War , being commissioned as asecond lieutenant on16 August 1942 , [LondonGazette|issue=35690|startpage=3857|date=1 September 1942 |accessdate=2008-04-29] and was posted toNorth Africa ,Sicily ,Italy andAustria . In 1946 he took up a lecturing post at hisalma mater , now theUniversity of Nottingham , using the university’s facilities to undertake research for his doctorate. He retained his commission and was involved in the UniversityOfficers Training Corps detachment. Under his leadership the school became recognized as one of the leading civil engineering research establishments in the country. He later served the university as Dean of Engineering and as
Vice-Chancellor .He was elected president of the
Institution of Civil Engineers in 1978 [http://www.ice.org.uk/about_ice/president_past.asp ICE past presidents] ] and retired from his University positions shortly afterwards. He later took up the post of Head of Civil Engineering at theUniversity of Papua New Guinea .Coates was a victim of
