Nishiogi-Kita

Nishiogikubo (西荻窪; にしおぎくぼ) is a district within Suginami Ward of Tokyo in Japan. It is further divided to 5 neighbourhoods of Nishiogi-kita (西荻北: にしおぎきた) and 4 neighbourhoods of Nishiogi-minami (西荻南: にしおぎみなみ). Histoically it formed a unitary village of Kami-Ogikubo together with modern-day Kamiogi district of Suginami.

Characteristics

The area has Nishiogikubo Station serving JR Chuo and Sobu lines. The neighbourhood is primarily residential, and is known to have a high concentration of shops specialised in antique curiosas and second-hand books, as well as establishments that play live music.

pirituality subculture and Nishiogikubo

For currently unknown reasons, Nishiogikubo boosts a number of organisations and institutions related to neo-religious cult movement. It was formerly a site of Kōfuku-no-Kagaku headquarter (currently relegated to a regional office), a de facto head office of a cult World Mate, as well as major offices and dojos of a cult group Aleph (formerly known as Aum Shinrikyo). A Japanese actor Tetsuro Tamba, also known for his research on spirituality, used to reside in this district.
