Open Source in Libraries

Joshua Ferraro completed his associates degree with honors from Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, Massachusetts. He subsequently joined the Nelsonville Public Library System as Systems Administrator where he pioneered efforts to migrate all of the library's systems from proprietary to open-source and free software.

As a result of Ferraro's efforts, the Nelsonville Public Library System was the first library system in the U.S. to use an open-source Integrated Library System (Koha). Ferraro has contributed to several library software projects including Koha and now serves as the official Koha Project Release Manager. He has extensive knowledge of library and computer science standards and is a capable programmer and Internet applications developer with experience using a number of library-relevant programming tools and toolkits.

In 2005, Ferraro started OpenNCIP, which will be an open-source toolkit for implementation of the NCIP Circulation Interchange Protocol and which will form the basis of implementation of that standard for two open-source ILSes: Koha and Evergreen.

In 2002, Ferraro served on the Technology Task Force for Ohio's Futures Initiative and drafted the resulting report. He also served on OLC's Program Committee for 2004 and currently serves on OLC's Technology Division Action Council. He is a member of the National NCIP Implementor's group. He has been a featured speaker at several library conferences including OLC Annual, TheRightClick 1.0, and OVAL's Koha workshop. At the 2005 OLC Annual Conference, Ferraro spearheaded the Linux Installfest and Kohafest: hands-on events designed to give library staff practical experience with open source and Koha.

In 2005, Ferraro founded the first company in the library industry with an open-source business model, LibLime.

LibLime operates on an open source business model based on open code, community development, professional quality-assurance services, and subscription-based customer support.
