Alpher served in the
Israel Defense Force as an intelligence officer, followed by 12 years of service in theMossad . In 1981-1995, he was assistant director and director of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies atTel Aviv University . In 1995-2000, he was director of theAmerican Jewish Committee 's Israel/Middle East office in Jerusalem. At the Jaffee Centre, Alpher coordinated a research project seeking solutions to the conflict with the Palestinians and developed a plan for an Israeli-Palestinian territorial settlement. Since 1992, Alpher has coordinated several dialogues between Israelis and Arabs.In 2002, Alpher published "And the Wolf Shall Dwell with the Wolf: The Settlers and the Palestinians" (HaKibbutz Hameuchad, Hebrew).
Alpher is married to Irene Tamar Alpher. They have three children and four grandchildren. They live in
Ramat HaSharon , north ofTel Aviv .In April 2008, Alpher signed a letter of support for the recently created
