Background

Prior to starting his personal development site, Steve was the founder and CEO of Dexterity Software as well as a software developer at that company. Dexterity published the award-winning computer game "Dweep". In 2000, "Dweep" won the Shareware Industry Award. [ [http://www.siavoting.com/pastwinners.php 2000-1992 Shareware Industry Award Winners] ] In 2001, the sequel "Dweep Gold" won the Shareware Industry Award for Best Action/Arcade Game [ [http://www.siavoting.com/2001awards.php 2001 Shareware Industry Awards Winners and Nominees] ] (beating out Arkanoid for the honour).

Steve Pavlina served as Vice President of the Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP) in 1999 [http://asp-shareware.org/membership/asphof.asp Association of Shareware Professionals Hall of Fame] ] and President of the ASP in 2000. By this stage, Steve's writings in the software development community were already having a significant impact [ [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_87/493-The-Indie-Guru The Escapist : The Indie Guru ] ] . The ASP's Hall of Fame page describes him as having had "a significant, lasting influence on others via his articles and postings".

On October 31, 2006, Steve Pavlina closed Dexterity Software and retired from game development in order to focus on a web site and blog dedicated to personal development, [http://www.stevepavlina.com/ StevePavlina.com] .

Steve's blog covers topics such as personal development and success; consciousness and courage; productivity, motivation and goal setting; career, wealth and business; and spirituality [ [http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/category/personal-development/ Personal Development ] ] . Some of his most popular writing is around lifestyle experimentation, where Steve will try a different style of living and transparently blog about the day-to-day experience. His most famous experiment in this regard is with polyphasic sleep [Citation | last1 = della Cava | first1 = Marco R. | title = When sleep is just a dream; Overstimulated Americans struggle to get quality rest | newspaper = USA Today | date = 2006-02-27 | pages = A1 | issn = 07347456 | year = 2006 | url = http://www.usatoday.com/educate/college/healthscience/articles/20060305.htm ] , with a related article on early rising [cite web | url=http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/05/how-to-become-an-early-riser/ | title=How to Become an Early Riser | author=Pavlina, Steve | date=May 23, 2005 | accessdate=2007-12-04] appearing in the British newspaper "The Guardian". After being arrested for grand theft in Sacramento, CA and given 60 hours of community service [ [https://services.saccourt.com/indexsearchnew/CaseNumberList.aspx?SearchValues=PAVLINA,STEPHEN,MICHAEL,2277077 County of Sacramento Court record for Steve Pavlina, case #91M01363, 1991-04-02] ] , Steve claims that this was the impetus he needed to turn his life around. He claims to have earned two college degrees in three semesters [ [http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/12/graduating-college-in-3-semesters/ Graduating College in 3 Semesters ] ] from California State University, Northridge [http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2006/07/ask-steve-rapid-fire-questions/ Ask Steve - Rapid-Fire Questions ] ] - he says that he partly achieved this by attending a college that was generous in awarding advanced placement credits for courses he had taken in high school, thus reducing his required course. [ [http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2006/09/student-graduates-college-in-only-two-semesters// Student Graduates College in Only Two Semesters ] ] .

Steve added a public forum to his website in 2006 [http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2006/11/forums-launched/] .
